About Dr. Cory Stephens
DNP, MSN, RN, CNE, NI-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS
I am a nursing informatics educator, scholar, and technology leader preparing nurses, faculty, and health care organizations for an AI-enabled future. My work sits at the intersection of nursing informatics, generative artificial intelligence, digital health, instructional technology, and workforce development. I help people move from curiosity or uncertainty about emerging technologies to responsible implementation. My goal is to make technology understandable, usable, ethical, and meaningful for nursing practice. As an Assistant Professor of Nursing Informatics at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, I lead work focused on responsible AI integration, competency-based education, and technology-enabled teaching and learning. I have developed innovations including JAIMIE the Virtual Teaching Assistant, custom GPTs, faculty development programs, and curriculum strategies that help educators and students build AI literacy while preserving human judgment, accountability, and trust. My scholarship and service translate complex informatics concepts into applied knowledge. I am especially interested in how generative AI, clinical decision support, digital health tools, and informatics infrastructure can improve nursing education, workflow, patient safety, access, and quality. Technology should not replace nursing expertise. It should strengthen the conditions in which nurses teach, learn, lead, and care. Before joining academia full time, I served in nursing informatics and clinical technology roles at the National Institutes of Health, contributing to clinical decision support, telehealth expansion during COVID-19, Microsoft 365 adoption, mobile EHR implementation, app development, and workflow improvement. That practice-based foundation keeps my academic work grounded in clinical and organizational needs.I hold national certifications as a Nurse Educator, Informatics Nurse Specialist, and Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems, and I am a HIMSS Fellow. My contributions include grant-funded AI and informatics initiatives, national and international presentations, faculty development, professional service through HIMSS, Sigma Theta Tau International, and TIGER, and textbook scholarship, including my work as an author and editor of Artificial Intelligence for Nursing Education and other nursing informatics and education-focused publications. At the center of my work is a commitment to building bridges between people and technology.
