About Dr. Cory Stephens
DNP, MSN, RN, CNE, NI-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS
I am a nursing informatics professor, educator, scholar, and technology leader working at the intersection of nursing informatics, generative artificial intelligence, instructional technology, digital health, and practice-based nursing education.As an Assistant Professor of Nursing Informatics at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, I lead and contribute to teaching, scholarship, faculty development, and institutional initiatives focused on responsible AI integration and technology-enabled education. My work has progressed from individual educational innovations to funded, evaluated, published, and disseminated initiatives with school, university, statewide, national, and international reach.I serve as a Multiple Principal Investigator for AIM-High: AI in Maryland Higher Education and developed JAIMIE, an AI-powered virtual teaching assistant, along with other AI-enabled educational resources, faculty-development programs, and curriculum strategies. My scholarship focuses on how emerging technologies can be implemented, evaluated, governed, and sustained in ways that strengthen nursing education and practice.Before joining academia full time, I worked in nursing informatics and clinical technology roles at the National Institutes of Health, contributing to clinical decision support, telehealth, mobile EHR implementation, technology adoption, and workflow improvement.I am a Certified Nurse Educator, board-certified Informatics Nurse, Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems, and Fellow of HIMSS. I was also selected to the U.S. Department of State Fulbright Specialist Roster for 2026–2029.At the center of my work is a commitment to building bridges between people and technology—making emerging tools understandable, useful, responsible, and meaningful.
